システムコールやlibcなどのライブラリは、エラーが発生したときに errnoの値をセットものがあります。

/usr/include/errno.h (実体は /usr/include/sys/errno.h )に定義される errnoは、マクロで、 ___errno() を呼び出します。 __errnoは、整数 errnoへのポインタを返します。そのポインタの指すアドレスの値を参照することで、 errnoにセットされている値を取得されます。
